Jah

Jah is a poetic contraction of YHWH (Yahweh), the covenant name of Israel's God, used especially in poetry and doxology. It appears 49 times in the Hebrew Bible, most frequently in the Psalms, and is embedded in the exclamation Hallelujah ("praise Yah"). The form appears explicitly in Psalm 68:4: "Extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name JAH, and rejoice before him." It also appears in compound names like Elijah (Eliyahu, "my God is Yah"), Isaiah (Yesha'yahu, "salvation of Yah"), and Jeremiah (Yirmeyahu). The name points to the eternal, self-existent being of God — the One who IS.
