Jannes

Name

Jannes was one of the Egyptian magicians who, along with Jambres, opposed Moses before Pharaoh (2 Tim. 3:8). Their names are not found in the Exodus narrative but appear in ancient Jewish traditions and apocryphal texts, including the Targum of Pseudo-Jonathan (Ex. 7:11) and the Damascus Document from Qumran. Paul invokes them in 2 Timothy 3 as prototypes of false teachers in the last days — men of corrupt minds who resist the truth as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses. The tradition was apparently well-known enough that Paul could cite it without explanation.
