Name meaning: "enlightening; appearing"

Japhia (meaning enlightening; appearing) is the name of two men and one place. (1.) The king of Lachish who joined the Amorite coalition against Gibeon and was defeated and killed by Joshua at the battle of Aijalon (Josh. 10:3, 26). (2.) One of David's sons born at Jerusalem (2 Sam. 5:15; 1 Chr. 3:7; 14:6). (3.) A border town on the southern boundary of Zebulun (Josh. 19:12), identified with modern Yafa, a village near Nazareth. The name's use for both a person and place is common in biblical Hebrew.
