Jeduthun

Jeduthun (meaning his law or giving praise) was a Levite of the family of Merari appointed by David as one of the three masters of music for the sanctuary, alongside Asaph and Heman (1 Chronicles 16:41-42; 25:1-6). His sons served in the ministry of prophesying with lyres and harps. Several psalms carry the superscription "to Jeduthun" or "according to Jeduthun" (Psalms 39, 62, 77), indicating either a musical guild associated with his name or a specific melody or style.

Jeduthun was also called Ethan (1 Chronicles 15:17, 19), suggesting the two names belonged to the same person or were closely associated figures. His ministry continued into the reign of Solomon (2 Chronicles 35:15) and his descendants maintained their role as sanctuary singers through the post-exilic period, with Jeduthun's descendants numbered among the Levitical singers who returned from Babylon (Nehemiah 11:17).
