Jehoahaz

Jehoahaz (meaning possession of the LORD) was the name of three biblical kings. (1.) Jehoahaz king of Israel, son of Jehu, who reigned approximately 814–798 B.C. His reign saw severe oppression by Syria (Hazael and Ben-hadad) under which Israel was reduced to almost no army. When Jehoahaz "sought the LORD," God raised up a deliverer, though Israel did not repent of Jeroboam's sins (2 Kings 13:1-9). (2.) Jehoahaz king of Judah (also called Ahaziah), son of Jehoram, who reigned one year and was killed by Jehu (2 Chronicles 21:17; 22:1-9). (3.) Jehoahaz, also called Shallum (Jeremiah 22:11), a son of Josiah who reigned three months before being deported to Egypt by Pharaoh Neco (2 Kings 23:31-34).

The third Jehoahaz is the subject of Jeremiah's lament (Jeremiah 22:10-12): "Weep not for the dead, neither bemoan him: but weep sore for him that goeth away: for he shall return no more, nor see his native country." He died in Egypt, the first Judahite king to die in exile.
