Jehoash

Jehoash (also Joash; meaning fire of the LORD) was the name of two kings. (1.) Jehoash king of Judah, son of Ahaziah, who was hidden by his aunt Jehosheba in the temple for six years while Athaliah usurped the throne. Restored to power by the priest Jehoiada at age seven, he reigned forty years (c. 835–796 B.C.) and oversaw the repair of the temple — but after Jehoiada's death fell into idolatry and had Zechariah, Jehoiada's son and a prophet, stoned (2 Kings 12; 2 Chronicles 24). (2.) Jehoash king of Israel, son of Jehoahaz, who reigned c. 798–782 B.C., recovered territory from Syria as Elisha prophesied, and defeated Amaziah of Judah (2 Kings 13:10-25; 14:1-16).

The death-bed scene between Elisha and Jehoash of Israel is particularly vivid: the prophet commands the king to shoot arrows eastward (a prophetic acted oracle of victory), then strike the ground — but the king strikes only three times, drawing the prophet's rebuke that he will defeat Syria only three times rather than completely (2 Kings 13:14-19).
