Jehovah-jireh

Jehovah-jireh (meaning the LORD will see, or the LORD will provide) is the name Abraham gave to the mountain in the land of Moriah where God provided a ram in place of Isaac at the moment of sacrifice (Genesis 22:14). The Hebrew verb ra'ah (to see) carries the double sense of seeing a need and providing for it — God sees the situation and provides what is required.

The name enshrined a theological principle that became proverbial: "On the mount of the LORD it will be provided" (Genesis 22:14). The ram caught in the thicket was understood from earliest times as a type of the substitutionary sacrifice that God himself would provide — the Lamb of God. The location, identified with Mount Moriah, is the same ridge on which the Jerusalem temple would later be built (2 Chronicles 3:1), linking Abraham's binding of Isaac, the Levitical sacrificial system, and ultimately Christ's crucifixion at the same site under one theological narrative of divine provision through substitutionary death.
