Jehovah-tsidkenu

Jehovah-tsidkenu (meaning the LORD our righteousness) is the messianic title given to the coming Davidic king in Jeremiah's oracle of hope: "In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness" (Jeremiah 23:6). The oracle comes in the context of God's promise to raise up a "righteous Branch" from David's line to replace the corrupt shepherds who had scattered God's flock. The same name is applied to the restored Jerusalem in Jeremiah 33:16.

The title is theologically remarkable: it attributes not merely righteousness but the name YHWH itself to the coming king, suggesting his divine identity. Paul's doctrine of imputed righteousness — that in Christ, sinners receive the righteousness of God as a gift through faith (Romans 3:21-22; 2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Corinthians 1:30: "Christ Jesus... has become for us wisdom from God — that is, our righteousness") — is the New Testament fulfillment of Jehovah-tsidkenu: the LORD himself is the righteousness available to his people.
