Jehozabad
Name meaning: "the Lord's dowry; having a dowry"
Jehozabad (meaning the LORD has endowed or the LORD's dowry) is the name of three biblical figures. (1.) A Levitical gatekeeper, son of Obed-edom, appointed in David's organization of the sanctuary (1 Chronicles 26:4). (2.) One of the two servants who assassinated King Joash of Judah after the stoning of Zechariah the prophet (2 Kings 12:21); Joash was killed in his bed as divine judgment for the blood of Zechariah. (3.) A military commander under Jehoshaphat commanding 180,000 men from Benjamin (2 Chronicles 17:18).
The assassin Jehozabad is identified as the son of a Moabite woman (2 Kings 12:21), which may reflect the Chronicler's interest in the foreign connections of those who acted against the Davidic line. His action against Joash, however, is presented in the narrative context of Joash's sin in killing Zechariah, making the assassination an instrument of providential retribution.
