Jeshebeab

Jeshebeab (meaning sitting or captivity of the father) was head of the fourteenth division of the twenty-four priestly courses established by David for rotation of service at the sanctuary (1 Chronicles 24:13). He and his group would have served two weeks per year plus the major festivals in the regular rotation of priestly ministry.

Like many of the priestly division heads in 1 Chronicles 24, Jeshebeab appears only in this organizational list. The twenty-four courses of priests — established here in detail — became the foundational organizational structure of both the Jerusalem temple and later Jewish synagogue practice. By the New Testament period, this system was still operative: Zechariah, father of John the Baptist, served in "the division of Abijah" (Luke 1:5; the eighth course).
