Jeuel

Jeuel (meaning God has taken away or God heaping up) was a descendant of Zerah (Judah's son through Tamar) through the line of Shelah, whose family settled in Jerusalem after the return from Babylon (1 Chronicles 9:6). The number given for the Shelahite returnees — 690 men — suggests a substantial family contingent.

Jeuel appears only in this post-exilic settlement list and has no associated narrative. The genealogical lists of 1 Chronicles 9 document those who resettled Jerusalem and Judah after the Babylonian exile, providing a sociological snapshot of the early restoration community. The inclusion of Shelahite Judahites (descendants of a line often overshadowed by the Perez branch from which David came) reflects the Chronicler's interest in the comprehensive representation of the whole of Judah in the restored community.
