Jeush

Jeush (meaning he that is devoured or assembler) is the name of five individuals in the Old Testament. The most notable are: (1.) A son of Esau by his wife Oholibamah, and a chief of Edom (Genesis 36:5, 14, 18). (2.) A son of Eshek, a Benjamite descendant of Saul (1 Chronicles 7:10). (3.) A Levite of the family of Gershom: since he had few sons, he and his brother Beriah were counted as one family in the Levitical census (1 Chronicles 23:10-11).

The Edomite chief Jeush, as a son of Esau, represents the Edomite aristocracy at its founding generation — one of the chiefs who ruled in Edom before Israel had a king (Genesis 36:18). The genealogical range of the name across Edom, Benjamin, and Levi illustrates its common use in the wider Semitic onomastic tradition.
