Jezreel, Blood of
The blood of Jezreel refers to the mass killings carried out at Jezreel by Jehu when he executed his coup against the house of Ahab (2 Kings 9–10) — specifically the deaths of King Joram of Israel, King Ahaziah of Judah, Jezebel, and subsequently the seventy sons of Ahab whose heads were brought to Jehu at Jezreel. Though commanded by God through Elisha (2 Kings 9:6-8), the manner and scope of the bloodshed attracted prophetic criticism.
Hosea 1:4 delivers God's word to his son named Jezreel: "I will soon punish the house of Jehu for the massacre at Jezreel, and I will put an end to the kingdom of Israel." This oracle creates a theological tension: God commanded the execution of Ahab's house yet also punishes Jehu's house for the blood that was shed. The resolution lies in Jehu's later apostasy and the fact that political obedience may be attended by excessive violence. The "blood of Jezreel" thus became a byword for violence that, even when judicially provoked, carries guilt that God will reckon.
