Jezreel, Tower of

Place

The tower of Jezreel was a watchtower or lookout post situated within or near the royal city of Jezreel in the northern kingdom of Israel. It is mentioned in connection with the lookout who watched for Jehu's approach during the revolution that overthrew the house of Ahab, spotting the rapid driving of his chariot from a distance before his arrival at the city gates.

Watchtowers of this kind were standard features of Israelite fortified towns, serving both military and civil functions as observation points over the surrounding plain.
