Jezreel, Valley of

The Valley of Jezreel is the great triangular plain stretching across northern Israel between the hill country of Galilee to the north and the ridge of Mount Carmel and Samaria to the south, bounded on the east by the Jordan Valley. Also known as the Plain of Esdraelon, it served as the primary highway between the Mediterranean coast and Transjordan and was the site of numerous decisive battles in biblical history, including Gideon's rout of the Midianites and the death of Saul at the hands of the Philistines.

Its fertility made it central to Israelite agriculture, and its strategic position guaranteed it a role in the major conflicts of every era. Hosea's prophecy that God would break the bow of Israel in the Valley of Jezreel gave the name an eschatological dimension later echoed in the imagery of Armageddon.
