Joash
Person Name
Name meaning: "who despairs or burns"
Joash (meaning: who despairs or burns) is the name of several biblical figures, the most notable being Joash king of Judah, who was hidden in the temple as an infant to save him from Queen Athaliah's slaughter of the royal family, then crowned at age seven under the protection of the high priest Jehoiada. His reign saw significant temple repair funded by a systematic collection from the people. Another Joash was the father of Gideon, an Abiezrite of Manasseh, who defended his son after Gideon destroyed the altar of Baal.
A third Joash was king of Israel, grandson of Jehu, who won three victories over the Syrians as Elisha prophesied on his deathbed.
