Jochebed
Person Name
Name meaning: "glorious; honorable"
Jochebed (meaning: glorious; honorable) was the daughter of Levi, wife of Amram, and mother of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. When Pharaoh decreed the death of all Hebrew male infants, she hid her son Moses for three months and then, unable to conceal him longer, placed him in a waterproofed basket among the reeds of the Nile, where he was discovered and adopted by Pharaoh's daughter. Her faith in this act of desperate protection is commended in the New Testament.
Jochebed is notable as the only woman in the Old Testament explicitly said to be the daughter of Levi, making her the ancestress of Israel's priestly and prophetic leadership.
