Johanan

Johanan (meaning: who is liberal or merciful) is the name of a number of men in Scripture, the most prominent being the military commander who warned Gedaliah of a plot against his life after the fall of Jerusalem, a warning that went unheeded. After Gedaliah's assassination, Johanan led the remnant community in seeking Jeremiah's counsel, then defied the prophet's word and led the people to Egypt. Another Johanan was the firstborn son of King Josiah, and yet another was the son of Eliashib in the time of Ezra.
