John Gill

John Gill (1697–1771) was an English Particular Baptist theologian and the first major Baptist systematic theologian. His monumental Exposition of the Old and New Testament (1746–63) covered every verse of the Bible in exhaustive philological and doctrinal detail, drawing on Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek sources alongside rabbinic literature. A staunch Calvinist, he also wrote a Body of Doctrinal and Practical Divinity. His commentary remains a standard reference for its unparalleled detail on the OT Hebrew text.

The first major Baptist systematic theologian, Gill produced in his Exposition of the Old and New Testament a complete verse-by-verse commentary on the entire Bible, unusual for its deep engagement with Hebrew and with rabbinic and Talmudic sources. A robust defender of the doctrines of grace, his learned, doctrinally rich notes remain in use among students and preachers today.
