Joktan (meaning: small dispute; contention; disgust) was the second son of Eber in the genealogy of Shem, and the brother of Peleg, in whose days the earth was divided. Joktan is the progenitor of thirteen Arabian peoples listed in the Table of Nations in Genesis 10, including Hazarmaveth, Jerah, and Havilah. He is generally identified as the ancestor of the southern Arabian peoples, making the Joktanide tribes one of the major branches of Semitic civilization in the ancient world.
