Joppa

Joppa (meaning: beauty; comeliness), the modern city of Jaffa on the Mediterranean coast of Israel, was the principal seaport serving Jerusalem, located about thirty-five miles northwest of the capital. The cedars of Lebanon floated down to Joppa for the building of both Solomon's temple and the second temple after the return from exile. Jonah departed from Joppa when fleeing his commission to Nineveh.

In the New Testament, the disciple Tabitha (Dorcas) lived in Joppa and was raised from the dead by Peter, who subsequently lodged there with Simon the tanner. It was at Joppa that Peter received the vision of the sheet descending from heaven, preparing him for the mission to the household of Cornelius at Caesarea.
