Journey

In biblical usage, journey most often refers to a measured unit of travel, particularly the "sabbath day's journey," which Acts 1:12 records as the distance from the Mount of Olives to Jerusalem. Jewish tradition fixed this at approximately two thousand cubits (about half a mile or nine hundred meters), based on the maximum distance Israelites were permitted to travel outside their camp on the Sabbath according to Numbers 35:5. The limitation reflects the Sabbath law's intent to restrict labor and movement while permitting attendance at the tabernacle or synagogue.
