Juniper

The juniper of the Authorized Version most likely refers to the Retama raetam, the white broom plant of the desert regions of Palestine and Sinai, rather than the true juniper tree. This desert shrub, which can grow six to twelve feet high, provides some shade and was used as fuel. Elijah sat under a juniper in the wilderness of Beersheba when, exhausted and despairing, he prayed to die, and the angel of the Lord twice awoke him with food and water for the journey ahead. The roots of the retam also served as fuel, mentioned in Job, and its charcoal produced arrows in Psalm 120.
