Kartah

Kartah (meaning city) was a town in the tribal territory of Zebulun assigned to the Levites of the Merarite clan, listed in Joshua 21:34 as one of the cities given to the Levites from Zebulun's inheritance. It appears only in this Levitical city list and is not mentioned elsewhere in the biblical narrative.

Kartah's location within Zebulun's territory placed it in the lower Galilee region, the fertile area between the Jezreel Valley and the hills above the Sea of Galilee. Its Levitical designation meant it served as a center for priestly instruction and religious life for the surrounding population. The site has not been positively identified by modern archaeology, as many of the smaller Levitical cities in the northern tribes lack clear physical correlates. The city list in Joshua 21 reflects the Deuteronomic ideal of a network of Levitical teaching centers distributed throughout the tribal lands.
