Keil and Delitzsch

Keil and Delitzsch is the joint commentary on the Old Testament by Carl Friedrich Keil (1807–1888) and Franz Julius Delitzsch (1813–1890), two German Lutheran biblical scholars of the 19th century. Published in German between 1861 and 1875 and translated into English from 1866 to 1891, the work spans all 39 books of the Old Testament. It is marked by rigorous philological analysis of the Hebrew text, attention to ancient Near Eastern context, and a conservative theological outlook that affirmed the historical reliability of the Old Testament. Delitzsch's volumes on the Psalms and Job are especially celebrated, while Keil handled the historical and prophetic books. The commentary remains a foundational reference in evangelical Old Testament scholarship.
