Kemuel

Kemuel (meaning helper of God or assembly of God) is the name of three distinct figures in the Old Testament. The most genealogically significant was the third son of Nahor, Abraham's brother, by his wife Milcah (Genesis 22:21). Through his son Aram, Kemuel became the ancestor of the Aramean peoples—making him the Nahorite parallel to Abraham's Israelite lineage, with both families playing prominent roles in the patriarchal narratives.

A second Kemuel was the son of Shiphtan from the tribe of Ephraim, appointed as one of the twelve leaders who assisted in dividing the land of Canaan among the tribes (Numbers 34:24). A third Kemuel was the father of Hashabiah, the Levitical overseer of the tribe of Levi in David's administrative organization (1 Chronicles 27:17). The name's theological meaning—God raises up or God assembles—reflects the Hebrew naming convention of expressing faith in divine action, and its occurrence in three different tribal contexts suggests it was a widely used name in ancient Israel.
