Kenizzite

The Kenizzites were a people descended from Kenaz son of Eliphaz, grandson of Esau, whose territory was included in the land promised to Abraham in Genesis 15:19 alongside the Kadmonites and Kenites. They inhabited the region south and southeast of Canaan—the fringes of Edomite territory that bordered the Negev and Judean wilderness. The Kenizzites were ultimately absorbed into the tribe of Judah, with the Calebite and Othnielite families providing the clearest evidence of this integration.

Caleb son of Jephunneh is identified as a Kenizzite in Numbers 32:12 and Joshua 14:6, 14, yet he is fully incorporated into the tribe of Judah as prince and spy. Othniel son of Kenaz, the first judge, similarly represents Kenizzite lineage serving at the heart of Israelite leadership. The Kenizzite absorption into Judah illustrates the broader pattern in the Conquest narratives whereby non-Israelite peoples who aligned with Israel's covenant purpose were incorporated rather than destroyed—foreshadowing the New Testament theme of Gentile inclusion in the covenant people of God.
