Kithlish

Kithlish (meaning man's wall or it is a wall) was a town in the lowland district of Judah, listed in Joshua 15:40 among the cities in the second group of Shephelah towns. Its location in the Judean foothills placed it in the transitional zone between the coastal plain and the highland core of Judah, a strategically and agriculturally significant region contested between Israel and the Philistines throughout the monarchic period.

Kithlish is not mentioned elsewhere in the biblical narrative, and its precise location has not been established by archaeology. The Shephelah towns listed with it in Joshua 15—including Lachish, Eglon, Cabbon, Lahmam, and Makkedah—were among the strategically important fortress cities that controlled access to the interior of Judah, and Kithlish presumably served a similar function in its district. Its limited biblical footprint reflects the fate of many secondary towns in the Shephelah that were overshadowed by more prominent neighbors in both historical records and archaeological investigation.
