Laish

Laish was a city of the Sidonians in the extreme north of Palestine (Judg. 18:7, 14), also called Leshem (Josh. 19:47). It was an isolated, peaceful community when Danite spies discovered it during the period of the judges. The tribe of Dan seized and burned it, rebuilt the city, and renamed it Dan after their tribal father (Judg. 18:29). The site marks the northernmost point of the proverbial Israelite territory in the expression "from Dan to Beersheba." A second individual named Laish was the father of Phaltiel, to whom Saul gave his daughter Michal (1 Sam. 25:44; 2 Sam. 3:15).
