Landmark

Landmark (Hebrew gebul, boundary) refers to the boundary stones or markers that defined property lines in ancient Israel. The Mosaic law strictly prohibited removing a neighbor's landmark (Deut. 19:14; 27:17), and the prophets condemned those who moved ancient boundaries as acts of social injustice against the vulnerable (Prov. 22:28; 23:10; Hos. 5:10). In a land given by God as an inheritance to each tribe and clan, tampering with boundaries was not merely fraud but sacrilege against the divine order of covenant allotments established at the entry into Canaan.
