Lapwing

Lapwing appears in the Authorized Version as a translation of the Hebrew dukiphath (Lev. 11:19; Deut. 14:18), listed among the unclean birds. Most modern versions render it "hoopoe" (Upupa epops), a crested bird common throughout Palestine known for its distinctive crown of feathers and its habit of probing soil for insects. Its prohibition in Israel's dietary code was part of the broader separation of Israel from surrounding cultural associations, as the hoopoe was highly regarded in Egyptian and Near Eastern tradition.
