Lattice
Concept
A lattice (Hebrew eshnab) was a framework of crossed strips forming a screen or open window-covering in ancient Near Eastern dwellings, allowing ventilation while providing shade and privacy. Sisera's mother gazed through the lattice watching for her son's return (Judg. 5:28). King Ahaziah's fatal fall occurred "through a lattice in his upper chamber" (2 Kgs. 1:2). The wisdom teacher describes the seductress peering through her lattice (Prov. 7:6). In the Song of Solomon the beloved gazes through the lattice in eager longing (Song 2:9) — a motif of barely restrained presence and desire.
