Leah

Leah (meaning weary; tired), eldest daughter of the Aramean Laban, became the first wife of Jacob through her father's substitution on the wedding night (Gen. 29:16–25). Though less loved than Rachel, Leah was fruitful while Rachel remained barren, and she bore Jacob his first six sons — Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun — and a daughter, Dinah (Gen. 29:32–35; 30:17–21). Her sons Levi and Judah became the progenitors of Israel's two most consequential tribes: the priestly and the royal messianic line. God's attention to Leah's unloved condition — "the LORD saw that Leah was hated, and he opened her womb" (Gen. 29:31) — illustrates the biblical pattern of divine grace toward the marginalized. She was buried in the cave of Machpelah (Gen. 49:31).
