Leannoth is a term in the title of Psalm 88, appearing as "Mahalath Leannoth." Its meaning is debated: the word may derive from the Hebrew root meaning "to answer" or "to sing antiphonally," suggesting a musical direction such as "for responsive singing." Alternatively it may come from a root meaning "affliction," yielding "concerning affliction." Psalm 88 itself is the darkest lament in the Psalter, with no resolution of hope — making either interpretation fitting.
