Leek

Concept

Leeks (Hebrew hasir) are mentioned in Numbers 11:5 among the foods the Israelites craved after leaving Egypt: "We remember... the leeks, the onions, and the garlic." The Hebrew term may refer specifically to leeks (Allium porrum) or more broadly to green herbs. Leeks were a staple vegetable in ancient Egypt, where they were highly prized. Their mention in the wilderness murmuring is particularly pointed — the people were willing to return to bondage for vegetables, revealing their failure to value spiritual redemption above physical comfort.
