Lentiles

Lentils (Hebrew adashim) were a common legume cultivated across Palestine and the ancient Near East. The most famous biblical reference is Esau's sale of his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of red lentil pottage (Gen. 25:29–34) — a transaction the author of Hebrews cites as an example of despising one's inheritance (Heb. 12:16–17). David's men received lentils among provisions brought to Mahanaim during Absalom's rebellion (2 Sam. 17:28). Ezekiel was instructed to include lentils in the bread he made during his symbolic siege of Jerusalem (Ezek. 4:9).
