Levi

Levi (“joined” or “attached”) was the third son of Jacob by Leah, named in her hope that now her husband would be “joined” to her (Genesis 29:34). From him descended the tribe of Levi, set apart for the service of God — the line of Moses, Aaron, and the whole priesthood. His story is one of Scripture’s clearest pictures of a curse transformed into blessing.

Levi’s early record was violent. With his brother Simeon he avenged the defilement of their sister Dinah by treacherously slaughtering the men of Shechem (Genesis 34:25-26). On his deathbed Jacob did not bless their fierce anger but pronounced, “I will divide them in Jacob and scatter them in Israel” (Genesis 49:5-7) — a word of judgment that would later be turned to good.

That turning came at Sinai. When Israel worshiped the golden calf, Moses called, “Who is on the LORD’s side? Come to me,” and the sons of Levi rallied to him, taking a costly stand for God’s holiness; for this zeal they were “ordained for the service of the LORD” (Exodus 32:26-29). The LORD took the Levites in place of Israel’s firstborn (Numbers 3:11-13), assigning them the care of the tabernacle and its furnishings, while the priesthood proper was given to Aaron’s house (Numbers 3:5-10).

So Jacob’s curse of scattering became the means of blessing: the tribe received no single territorial inheritance but was given forty-eight cities throughout the land (Joshua 21:41), from which the Levites taught the law and led worship across Israel — the scattering now serving God’s purpose. The LORD himself was their portion: “The Levitical priests… shall have no portion or inheritance with Israel… the LORD is their inheritance” (Deuteronomy 18:1-2; Numbers 18:20). Their priestly ministry of sacrifice and mediation pointed forward to Christ — though Hebrews shows that the Levitical order, being imperfect, gave way to the greater priesthood of Jesus after the order of Melchizedek (Hebrews 7:11). (The name Levi also belongs to the tax collector who became the apostle Matthew.)
