Libertine

Libertine (Latin libertinus) designates a freed slave or the child of a freed slave. The term appears once in the New Testament (Acts 6:9), referring to the "Synagogue of the Libertines," likely a congregation of Jews descended from those who had been taken as prisoners of war to Rome by Pompey (63 B.C.) and subsequently freed. This Jerusalem synagogue opposed Stephen's preaching and brought forward the accusations that led to his trial and martyrdom (Acts 6:11–14; 7:54–60).
