Lie

Concept

Lying and falsehood are among the most consistently condemned sins in Scripture, rooted in the nature of Satan, who "is a liar and the father of lies" (John 8:44), and contrasted with God who "cannot lie" (Titus 1:2) and whose word is truth (John 17:17). The ninth commandment prohibits false witness (Ex. 20:16), and Proverbs lists a lying tongue among the seven things the LORD hates (Prov. 6:17). The story of Ananias and Sapphira illustrates the deadly gravity of deliberate deception within the covenant community (Acts 5:1–11). In Revelation, all liars are excluded from the New Jerusalem alongside the other categories of the unredeemed (Rev. 21:8; 22:15).
