Ligure

Ligure (Hebrew leshem) was the first stone in the third row of the high priest's breastplate (Ex. 28:19; 39:12), engraved with the name of one of the twelve tribes. Its precise identification is uncertain: the Septuagint renders it ligurion, which ancient writers associated with amber or with a stone from the Ligurian coast of Italy, while modern scholars have proposed jacinth (zircon), opal, or amber. The gemstone remains one of the several breastplate stones whose exact species has been lost in translation.
