Maarath

Maarath (meaning desolation or den) was a town in the hill country of Judah listed in Joshua 15:59 among the cities of the sixth district of Judah's tribal territory. Its exact location is uncertain; some scholars have proposed an identification with a site in the highlands west of Hebron. Like many of the smaller towns in this list, Maarath appears only in the boundary and city catalogues of Joshua without further narrative mention.

The name's meaning of desolation or barrenness may reflect the character of the surrounding terrain in the Judean hill country, where water sources were limited and agricultural conditions challenging.
