Maath

Maath (meaning small or wiping away) was an ancestor of Jesus listed in Luke's genealogy (Luke 3:26), placed between Mattathias and Naggai in the line from David through Nathan. Unlike the Matthean genealogy, which traces through Solomon and the royal line, Luke's genealogy descends through Nathan, David's son, and preserves names largely unknown from the Old Testament historical books — including Maath.

Maath appears to belong to the long post-exilic segment of Luke's genealogy that is not independently documented in the Hebrew Bible. His inclusion attests to the real genealogical records that Jewish families maintained through the Second Temple period tracing descent from David. Beyond his place in the genealogical line, nothing further is recorded about Maath in Scripture.
