Machir

Machir (meaning sold) was the name of two men in the Old Testament. (1.) The eldest son of Manasseh and grandson of Joseph, and the only son Manasseh had (Joshua 17:1). His mother was an Aramean concubine (1 Chronicles 7:14). Machir's own son Gilead gave his name to the Transjordanian territory of Gilead, and the half-tribe of Manasseh settled east of the Jordan in that region (Numbers 32:39–40; Joshua 13:31). Through his daughter Maacah, Machir was the grandfather of Zelophehad, whose five daughters successfully petitioned Moses for an inheritance when their father left no sons (Numbers 26:29–33; 27:1–7).

(2.) A son of Ammiel who lived at Lo-debar and sheltered Mephibosheth, the lame son of Jonathan, until David summoned him to Jerusalem and showed him kindness for Jonathan's sake (2 Samuel 9:4–5). This same Machir later brought provisions to David at Mahanaim during Absalom's rebellion (2 Samuel 17:27), demonstrating loyal generosity to the king in his hour of crisis.
