Mahath

Mahath (meaning grasping or the same as Maath) is the name of two Kohathite Levites. (1.) An ancestor of the prophet Samuel and musician Heman: "son of Amasai, son of Elkanah" (1 Chronicles 6:35). (2.) A Kohathite Levite who participated in the temple cleansing under Hezekiah (2 Chronicles 29:12) and was appointed as one of the overseers of the temple offerings under Hezekiah's reform (2 Chronicles 31:13). He worked alongside Kish son of Abdi in the initial Levitical purification that enabled the restoration of temple worship.

Both Mahaths belong to the Kohathite branch of the Levites, the family responsible for the most sacred objects of the tabernacle/temple. The second Mahath's role in Hezekiah's reform places him among the Levites who spearheaded the revival of covenantal worship after the neglect of Ahaz's reign — a revival described in 2 Chronicles 29–31 as one of the most complete religious renewals in the monarchy.
