Mahol

Person

Mahol (meaning dance) was the father of four sons — Ethan the Ezrahite, Heman, Chalcol, and Darda — who were celebrated for wisdom and are named in 1 Kings 4:31 as men whose wisdom Solomon's surpassed: "For he was wiser than all other men — wiser than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol." This verse establishes the benchmark by which Solomon's unprecedented wisdom was measured.

The sons of Mahol appear again in the psalm superscriptions: Psalm 88 is attributed to Heman the Ezrahite and Psalm 89 to Ethan the Ezrahite, suggesting these were real musical and wisdom figures. Whether "son of Mahol" is a literal patronymic or designates membership in a guild of dancers or musical performers (from the root mahol, dance) has been debated. If a guild designation, it would connect to the broader tradition of Levitical guilds like the sons of Korah and the sons of Asaph.
