Mattan

Mattan (meaning a gift) is the name of two biblical figures. The first was the priest of Baal in Jerusalem who was slain before his altars when Jehoiada the priest led the coup that overthrew Athaliah and restored Joash to the throne of Judah (2 Kings 11:18). The second was one of the princes of Judah in the reign of Zedekiah who cast the prophet Jeremiah into a muddy cistern (Jeremiah 38:1–6). The name also appears in the ancestry of Joseph, the husband of Mary (Matthew 1:15).
