Mephaath

Place Name

Name meaning: "appearance, or force, of waters"

Mephaath (meaning splendor or force of waters) was a city east of the Jordan originally belonging to Reuben, assigned to the Merarite Levites (Joshua 21:37). It is listed among the cities of Reuben in Joshua 13:18 and is mentioned in Jeremiah's oracle against Moab (Jeremiah 48:21), by which time it had apparently come under Moabite control. The site is possibly identified with modern Nefa'a, south of Amman in Jordan.
