Merathaim
Place
Merathaim (meaning double rebellion) is a symbolic name applied to Babylon in Jeremiah's oracle against it (Jeremiah 50:21). The prophet calls on the armies of God to go up against "the land of Merathaim" and against the inhabitants of Pekod, to destroy and utterly devote them to judgment. The name may also play on the Babylonian region Marratu (the salt marshes of southern Mesopotamia near the Persian Gulf), transforming a geographical term into a theological indictment of Babylon's persistent defiance of God.
