Meshech
Name meaning: "who is drawn by force"
Meshech was a son of Japheth and grandson of Noah (Genesis 10:2), whose descendants gave their name to a people and region in the ancient Near East. In the Table of Nations they are listed alongside Tubal and Javan as northern peoples beyond the civilized world known to Israel. Ezekiel pairs Meshech and Tubal repeatedly as merchants trading in human slaves and bronze vessels with Tyre (Ezekiel 27:13) and as northern confederates of Gog who will invade Israel in the eschatological battle (Ezekiel 38:2–3; 39:1).
Psalm 120:5 uses Meshech as a symbol of exile among barbarous peoples: Woe is me that I sojourn in Meshech, that I dwell among the tents of Kedar. Ancient sources associate Meshech with the Mushki people of Anatolia (modern Turkey), though later speculative identification with Moscow has no scholarly basis. The name also appears in 1 Chronicles 1:5 and as a personal name in 1 Chronicles 1:17.
