Mizzah

Mizzah was one of the four sons of Reuel, who was himself the son of Esau and his wife Basemath (Gen. 36:13). Mizzah thus belonged to the third generation of Esau's Edomite descendants, and along with his brothers Nahath, Zerah, and Shammah he is counted among the chiefs or clan-leaders of Edom (Gen. 36:17; 1 Chr. 1:37). The name Mizzah appears to mean despair or a form of bodily ailment in Hitchcock's interpretation, though the etymology is uncertain. Like most of the Edomite chiefs in Genesis 36, Mizzah is recorded without narrative detail; his significance lies in his position within the genealogical framework that traces the fulfillment of God's promise that Esau too would become a great nation (Gen. 25:23; 36:31–39).
